Joe Schaefer is a San Francisco based filmmaker, colorist, and post-production lead, originally from New Jersey. He has been making digital media for 15 years.

From 2019 to 2025 he was Director of Post Production at Complex Networks, overseeing a department of 30 editors, hiring editors, producers, colorists, and sound mixers, and leading licensing deals. He also cut Hot Ones as a Senior Editor at First We Feast.

Today he directs, shoots, edits, and grades documentaries and branded work. His independent documentary Black Girl Church won an HBO award for Best Short Documentary.
